Things to DO in Waco Part 1: The Mayborn

When you think of Waco, what immediately comes to mind? Thanks to Chip and Joanna, probably the Magnolia Silos.

While this is a fun outing, did you know that Waco boasts lots of fun things for families to enjoy?

Would you like an itinerary that does not include shopping, and promises to entertain the entire family at potentially a low cost? Read on.

Mayborn Museum

This stop could easily fill your entire day in Waco.  Nestled on the Baylor Campus, this Museum Caters to children and adults alike.

The permanent exhibits at this museum include Strecker’s Cabinets of Curiosity, Cretaceous Sea, The Hall of Natural History and the AWESOME Waco Wooley Mammoth Exhibit.  In the latter, visitors walk over a clear floor that reveals these prehistoric fossils found in Waco!

The top two floors host the Jeanes Discovery Center. This is an educational experience, masked as a kid wonderland.

Numerous rooms include interactive experiences including energy, pioneer life, bubbles, simple machines and so on.

These floors appeal more to a younger crowd. However, my older kids certainly enjoyed them a few years back as well.

Additionally, admission to the Governor Bill and Vara Daniel Historic Village is included. This 9-building village gives visitors a glimpse into 1890’s life along the Brazos River.

Periodically, the Mayborn hosts special exhibits. These cover various topics. One of my personal favorites was the Titanic experience. Attendees were assigned the character via ticket of a real-life Titanic passenger. You learned a little about their lives and family and why they were traveling on this vessel. At the end of the exhibit, you discovered whether your person survived the ship sinking.

These special exhibits have covered multiple topics including Legos, trains hands on science and so on. Note: these exhibits come an additional cost to the standard entrance fee.

Want to keep playing, but your troops are hungry? No problem! The museum has picnic tables outside available free of charge and a smaller spot indoors to dine. Pack a picnic in a cooler and pull it out when the time is right!

At a cost of $7 per adult and $5 per child, this museum provides really big bang for your buck.

Want more time to explore? No problem! A family membership for parents and non-adult kiddos runs $95 a year!  Because 2 of our kids are adults, we would opt for the $135 option.

Not only does this give you many perks at the Mayborn, it allows you to tour many other museums around the country for free and reduced rates!  We will talk about this more in another article. The Mayborn is part of the ASTC reciprocal benefits program. Google for more info. Again, I’ll flesh this out later with you and show how you can really save by owning one of these memberships.

Now that you have spent the day at the Mayborn, head on home. On the way, gas up at Buccees in Temple, Texas.  Take a potty break in the cleanest bathrooms around. Grab a .69 cent drink. If you want to skip making dinner, take home some delicious brisket or turkey sandwiches.

Hope your day in Waco was fun-filled and memorable!  If you stopped at the Silos-GREAT! If not, they will certainly be there next time! In the meantime, you can find a collection of Joanna Gaines’ famous recipes here! Making some of these might tide you over until you can make it!
