Late winter/early spring in Central Texas brings moderate temperatures. With the Cedar Pollen dissipated, now is the time to enjoy some family hikes with your family.
This winter, our tween, teen and adult-ish kiddo joined us on a hike to Crockett Falls.
Located in Cedar Breaks Park, on the San Gabriel River Trail, this 6-ish mile round trip loop is labeled as “Moderate” on the All Trails app. Having said that, it is on the easier spectrum of moderate. It is a long distance and there are some mild climbs, but nothing too strenuous. If anything, the rocky terrain and need for careful footing are probably how it earns this rating.
This hike is ideal for families with older children. Because of the rocky terrain, this is would prove a little more challenging for a toddler. It would not be great for taking anyone with balance issues or a tendency for tripping. Since I mentioned that it is not too difficult, it seems important to note this fact.
Suggested Tour
I recommend getting out to the park early, around 8 or 8:30 am. We did this and had the path to the falls mostly to ourselves. Hiking out, we encountered many new travelers.
Give yourselves 3 hours to enjoy this hike. It may take more or less time. As someone who wants to stop and enjoy the journey, I feel like 3 hours is a good safe time budget.
While on this hike, you will enjoy scenic views of Lake Georgetown.
At times, this hike leaves you enjoying the serenity of being surrounded by Cedar trees. Because of the havoc their pollen wreaks on my allergies, I usually have a desire to burn them all to the ground. This hike in large part redeems their existence.
Prior to reaching the falls, you will find yourselves face to face with Longhorns, a rustic shed that makes for a quintessential Texas scene. We knew to expect falls, but this came as quite the surprise.
Soon after, we discovered Crockett Falls. It is not your everyday falls. Think an umbrella with water dripping off.
It was unique and fun and naturally we had to get up close and check it out!
In the summer, this would be something to get wet in before heading back down the trail.
It is important to note that you could keep going and take a MUCH longer hike. We did not. 6 miles was plenty for us! We enjoyed the scenic route back to the car and enjoyed some Carl’s Junior for lunch. You could easily pack a picnic and enjoy it during this gorgeous hike.
Crockett falls is a unique family fun hike, and the cost is 100% free!
Wanting to visit Crockett Falls? From Austin, take I 35 North. Exit at Hwy 29 and head West (that is left for those of us immobilized by a lack of mountains. I feel you. I am you). Head right on DB Wood for 6 miles. Park in the Cedar Breaks parking lot. Park near THIS sign.
